Weed club near Benalmádena

Next door, not here

Velvet isn't a weed club in Benalmádena. It's one short train ride away. There's no second venue: nothing in Arroyo de la Miel, nothing at Puerto Marina, nothing on the seafront. Just Fuengirola.

Don't go looking for an Amsterdam-style coffee shop along the Benalmádena seafront either. Spain doesn't have them, and there's no retail sale. What it has are private, non-profit associations that adults sign up to as members. No counter, no walk-ins: you join first, then you come in. Why there are no coffee shops.

Arroyo or Torremuelle

Benalmádena has two stops on the Cercanías C-1. Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel is underground, in the middle of Arroyo. Torremuelle is on the coast, at the western end of Benalmádena Costa.

Take the train heading west, towards Fuengirola, not Málaga. From Arroyo de la Miel it's about 15 minutes. From Torremuelle, a few minutes less. There's a train roughly every 20 minutes, and Fuengirola is the last stop, so you can't overshoot.

Away from the stations

Around Puerto Marina? There's no station on the marina. Arroyo de la Miel station is uphill through the town: walk it, or take a short cab ride.

In Torrequebrada you're between the two stops, so pick the closer one: Torremuelle along the coast or Arroyo de la Miel up the hill. Up in Benalmádena Pueblo, take the local bus down to Arroyo de la Miel and get on the train there. Rather skip the train? Interurban buses run along the coast road to Fuengirola bus station.

By car

About 10 km west on the A-7. Ten to fifteen minutes without traffic, slower on summer evenings. If you drive, you don't consume. Traffic police test drivers for drugs at the roadside along the coast, and testing positive costs you a fine and licence points.

Back to Benalmádena

It's a short ride back, so a late one is no problem. The C-1 doesn't run all night, though: the last trains leave Fuengirola around midnight, and times change with the season. Check the Renfe timetable before you get comfortable, or plan on a taxi.

Before you go

It all stays at the club. Using or carrying cannabis in public, at Arroyo station, around the marina or on the beach, can get you a fine in Spain.
