Neighbours, not the same town

Mijas is two places. The white village up on the hill, Mijas Pueblo, and a long strip of coast called Mijas Costa. Velvet is in neither. The club is in Fuengirola, and only there.

Based in Las Lagunas? You'd barely notice you've left Mijas. The border with Fuengirola is so blurred there that some streets have one town on each side.

Mijas is no different from the rest of Spain: nowhere sells cannabis over a counter, and there are no Amsterdam-style coffee shops. What you'll find are clubs, set up as private non-profit associations for adults. You sign up as a member; you don't wander in as a customer. Coffee shops vs clubs, explained.

From Mijas Pueblo

The M-122 bus comes down from the village, through Las Lagunas, to Fuengirola bus station. About 25 minutes. By car it's around 8 km down the A-387, roughly a quarter of an hour.

From La Cala, Calahonda or Riviera del Sol

Mijas Costa stretches about 12 km, from El Faro, right by Fuengirola, west to Calahonda near the Marbella border. The M-220 runs along it between Marbella and Fuengirola roughly every half hour.

From Riviera del Sol it's a bit over 20 minutes to Fuengirola bus station. From Calahonda, a little longer. By car, La Cala is about 15 minutes on the A-7.

No train

Mijas has no station on the Cercanías. The C-1 from Málaga ends in Fuengirola, so from Mijas it's bus, car or taxi, or on foot from parts of Las Lagunas.

Driving down?

Then whoever's driving doesn't consume. In Spain a positive roadside test means a fine and points off your licence, however clear you feel. The buses don't run all night, so check the last one before you settle in.
